Kuvioitumat

Kuvioitumat is a Finnish term used to describe the emergence and presence of spatial patterns in natural and artificial systems. The concept refers to processes by which initially uniform or homogeneous states organize into structured arrangements through interactions, feedback, and nonlinear dynamics. While the word is used broadly, it is common in scientific Finnish to discuss pattern formation across multiple disciplines.

In biology, kuvioitumat describe developmental patterning such as animal coat markings or body segmentation, where genetic and cellular interactions create regular spatial structures. In chemistry and physics, the term is applied to reaction-diffusion systems, Liesegang-type patterns, convection-driven patterns, and other self-organizing phenomena where simple rules yield complex designs. Materials science and geology also use the term to refer to self-assembly, crystallization, phase separation, and patterned sedimentation or rock textures.
