Self-organization is the process by which a system develops ordered structures or behaviors through the local interactions of its components, without external control. It is observed across physical, chemical, biological, ecological, and social systems and is characterized by nonlinear dynamics, feedback, and emergent properties that are not predictable from individual parts alone.

Mechanisms include local rules, positive feedback that amplifies small fluctuations, and negative feedback that stabilizes the system. Through repeated interactions, global patterns such as synchronization, spatial patterns, or coherent movement can arise. Dissipative structures, a concept from Prigogine, describe ordered steady states maintained by energy flow through a system far from equilibrium.

Examples include convection rolls in heated fluids, chemical pattern formation like the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction, and biological processes such as morphogenesis and pigment patterning. In animal groups, simple interaction rules can produce flocking, schooling, or swarming, while in human systems traffic flow and market dynamics can self-organize into organized patterns or collective shifts without a central plan.

Self-organization is related to but distinct from self-assembly; self-assembly generally yields static structures via local interactions, whereas self-organization emphasizes dynamic, adaptive patterns emerging over time. It is a central idea in complexity science and informs fields from swarm robotics to distributed optimization and network design.

Historically, the term emerged in cybernetics and nonlinear science in the mid-20th century, with contributions from researchers including von Foerster and Prigogine. It remains a foundational concept for understanding how order can arise spontaneously in diverse systems.
