Keramikglaser

Keramikglaser is a craftsman or technician who specializes in applying glazes to ceramic wares, such as pottery, tableware, porcelain, and stoneware. The practice encompasses glaze formulation, mixing, testing, application, and firing, with emphasis on color, texture, and durability. In German-speaking crafts, keramikglaser may work in studios, workshops, or production facilities, often alongside potters and ceramic painters.

Techniques and finishes: Glazes are applied by dipping, pouring, brushing, or spraying onto bisque-fired ware. Common glaze types include transparent and opaque glazes, gloss and matte finishes, and underglaze or overglaze decoration. Some glazes incorporate color oxides, stains, or clear fluxes to achieve effects such as high gloss, satin, crackle, or opalescent surfaces. The keramikglaser may also apply decorative slips, engobes, or enamel paints before a final firing.

Process: After cleaning and sealing the bisque, glaze is applied in multiple coats as needed. Objects are air-dried and then fired in a kiln to a specified cone or temperature to mature the glaze. Post-firing inspection checks glaze coverage, texture, and glaze faults. Some productions use multiple firings (bisque, glaze firing, and sometimes glaze overglaze firing).

Materials and equipment: Glazes consist of silica, fluxes, alumina and colorants; many glazes are lead- or barium-based in older formulations, though contemporary practices favor lead-free and non-toxic compositions. Equipment includes glaze mixers, buckets, dipping baths, spray guns, brushes, and kilns; proper ventilation and protective gear are essential to handle dust and fumes.

Quality and safety: A keramikglaser must consider glaze compatibility with the clay body, firing range, and glaze thickness to minimize defects such as pinholes, crawling, crazing, pinholing, or running. Knowledge of kiln atmosphere, thermal expansion, and glaze chemistry informs adjustments. Ethical and safety standards emphasize lead-free formulations and worker protection.
