Stoneware is a durable ceramic ware fired at high temperatures to reach a vitrified, dense, and non-porous body. Typical glaze temperatures for stoneware range from about 1,150 to 1,300°C, resulting in a material that is strong, water-resistant, and capable of holding liquids without leaking.

The body is usually a mixture of ball clay, kaolin, and silica (quartz) or other fluxes. Colors range from gray to buff to brown, depending on the materials and firing conditions. The dense matrix gives stoneware notable strength and resistance to liquids, making it well suited for utilitarian uses.

Surfaces may be glazed or left unglazed. Traditional finishes include salt glaze, which produces a distinctive rough, orange-peel texture, and various decorative glazes such as tin glaze or slip-decorated surfaces. Decoration can be incised, slip-trailed, or sgrafitto, among other techniques, and wares are often finished with durable glazes that are lead-free in modern production.

Firing can occur in oxidation or reduction atmospheres; the high heat promotes vitrification and glaze maturation. Stoneware wares are produced through wheel throwing, molding, or hand-building and are typically oriented toward practical function, though decorative pieces are common as well.

Historically, stoneware has roots in East Asia and later became widespread in Europe. In Europe, salt-glazed stoneware from regions such as Westerwald became prominent from the 16th to 18th centuries. Modern stoneware continues to be produced worldwide for both mass-market and studio applications.

Today, stoneware is favored for cookware, bakeware, and tableware due to its durability and heat resistance. Glazes used in contemporary stoneware are generally lead-free, and care guidelines emphasize avoiding sudden temperature changes to prevent cracking.
