Karosseristiler

Karosseristiler are craftspeople and firms that design, form, and assemble the bodies of motor vehicles. In English, the closest term is coachbuilders. The term is used in Turkish and some other languages to describe those who work on vehicle shell work, either as independent ateliers or as part of larger manufacturers. The body, including doors, roof, panels, and interior fittings, is shaped to complement the chassis layout and mechanical systems.

Historical role: In the early automotive era (late 19th to mid-20th century), most cars used carriage-style bodies built by dedicated karosseristiler. Manufacturers would supply a chassis and engine, and a separate coachbuilder would craft the exterior and interior; this allowed customization and luxury features. Many renowned brands relied on external ateliers for bespoke bodies, while volume manufacturers gradually integrated bodywork into unibody designs.

Craft and processes: The work involves sketching and design, frame or panel fabrication, metal shaping, riveting and welding, finishing, upholstery, and painting. Traditional methods used wood or steel frames; later all-metal or monocoque bodies became common. In contemporary practice, computer-aided design (CAD), metal stamping, aluminum or composite panels, and precision assembly predominate in mass production; bespoke work remains for limited editions, conversions, and specialty vehicles.

Current status: The demand for external karosseristiler has declined with the rise of unibody construction and centralized body production. Nonetheless, coachbuilders and conversion houses continue to exist in luxury and specialty segments, producing custom bodies, convertibles, limousines, ambulances, or expedition vehicles, often under contract with manufacturers or as independent studios.

Etymology: The term derives from the French carrosserie via German Karosserie; in Turkish and other languages it denotes the profession of bodywork for motor vehicles.
