Interlinings

Interlinings are an additional fabric layer inserted between the outer fabric and the lining of a garment or other textile product. They provide structure, shape retention, warmth, and durability, helping garments to drape properly and maintain their form through wear and laundering.

Interlinings come in several forms. Fusible interlinings have an adhesive that bonds to the fabric when heat is applied. Sew-in interlinings are stitched in by hand or machine. They can be woven, nonwoven, or knit, and are made from natural fibers such as wool, cotton, and hair, or synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon, often in blends. Heavier interlinings are used for coats and jackets, while lighter versions are used for shirts and dresses. In high-quality tailoring, horsehair canvas or canvas-like interlinings may be used for collars, lapels, and waistbands to provide stiffness and resilience.

Applications and selection: Designers choose interlinings based on fabric weight, desired hand and drape, warmth, and care requirements. Interlinings are common in collars, cuffs, lapels, waistbands, and front panels of jackets and coats; they may also be used in upholstery, draperies, or other heavily structured textiles.

Care and handling: Interlinings may affect shrinkage and washability of the fabric. Fusible interlinings can stiffen or alter the hand if overheated or not matched to fabric; pre-shrinking is often advised. Interlinings are typically cut slightly smaller than the outer fabric to avoid bulk at the edges. Follow garment care instructions for cleaning and pressing.

Notes: The term is sometimes used interchangeably with interfacing, though in some contexts interlining refers specifically to warmth or structure layers between outer fabric and lining.
