canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty plain-woven fabric made from cotton or linen, or blends, used for sails, tents, awnings, and bags. Its name derives from its historical use as sailcloth. The fabric is valued for strength and durability and its ability to hold oil or paint when used as a painting surface. Canvas is commonly produced in weights measured in ounces per square yard or grams per square meter. It can be primed with gesso or other ground to accept paints, with neutrally sized fibers to improve adhesion and prevent shrinkage.

Artist’s canvas is typically stretched over a wooden frame, called a stretcher, and secured with tacks or staples. Common priming surfaces include gesso. Oil or acrylic paints adhere to the primed surface; the tooth of the surface influences brushwork. Over time, canvas can crack or warp if humidity and tension are not maintained.

HTML5 canvas is an element used in web pages to render graphics via JavaScript. It provides a bitmap drawing area using a two-dimensional context or WebGL; it is widely used for games, charts, animations, and image processing. It is not a DOM container but a drawing surface; content added with canvas is programmatically generated.
