Canvas
Canvas is a heavy-duty plain-woven fabric made from cotton or linen, or blends, used for sails, tents, awnings, and bags. Its name derives from its historical use as sailcloth. The fabric is valued for strength and durability and its ability to hold oil or paint when used as a painting surface. Canvas is commonly produced in weights measured in ounces per square yard or grams per square meter. It can be primed with gesso or other ground to accept paints, with neutrally sized fibers to improve adhesion and prevent shrinkage.
