The concept blends aspects of toughness, energy absorption, redundancy, and fail-safe behavior to reduce the probability of sudden, irreversible damage.

In practice, impact-tolerant design seeks to limit peak stresses, control deformation, and provide load paths that degrade gracefully under impact.
