Hinderarkitektur, often translated as "obstacle architecture" or "barrier architecture," refers to the design and construction of urban environments or specific structures that intentionally impede or control movement and access. This can manifest in various forms, from subtle design choices to overtly aggressive physical barriers. The purpose behind hinderarkitektur is typically to deter certain activities, protect property, or manage public spaces according to specific social or security objectives.

Examples of hinderarkitektur include hostile architecture features like spiked railings designed to prevent loitering or sleeping on public benches, overly smooth or sloped surfaces that make sitting or resting difficult, strategically placed planters or bollards that break up open spaces and make them less inviting for large gatherings, or the use of uncomfortable seating arrangements. In a broader sense, it can also encompass the design of gated communities, the placement of security checkpoints, or even the layout of a building that makes certain areas inaccessible to the general public.

The concept of hinderarkitektur is often controversial. Proponents argue it is a necessary tool for maintaining public order, preventing vandalism, and ensuring the efficient use of public and private spaces. Critics, however, contend that it is an exclusionary practice that targets vulnerable populations, particularly the homeless, and creates less welcoming and less inclusive urban environments.
