Common types include fixed bollards, removable bollards, and retractable or collapsible variants. Some are rated for vehicle impact and are described as crash-rated, meeting standards from organizations such as PAS 68 or IWA 14; decorative bollards emphasize appearance over high security.

Installation involves anchoring a bollard to a concrete foundation or plinth, with height and spacing chosen to balance protection with accessibility. In security applications, engineers consider sightlines, drainage, and interaction with curb ramps, signage, and lighting.

Applications span city streets, pedestrian malls, transit stations, school and government campus perimeters, healthcare facilities, and event venues. Maintenance includes inspecting for corrosion or damage, repainting or recoating, and replacing units as needed to maintain performance and appearance.
