Endomorfier

Endomorfier, or endomorphs, refer to a body-type category used in the somatotype framework to describe individuals who tend to accumulate fat more readily and have a softer, rounder physique. They typically have a wider pelvis, a higher fat-to-muscle ratio, and a stockier frame. The overall body can appear fuller, with lean mass often less visible at common weights.

Originating with William Sheldon’s somatotype theory in the 1940s, the classification divided people into endomorphs, mesomorphs, and ectomorphs. Modern science regards these categories as an oversimplification; most individuals display a mix of traits and respond to diet and training in varied ways. Endomorphy is best seen as a rough shorthand rather than a precise diagnostic label.

Typical traits include higher fat storage, especially around the abdomen, hips, and thighs; a rounder, softer appearance; and a frame that can be broader. Metabolic rate and insulin sensitivity vary among individuals, and genetic factors, age, sex, and activity level all influence body composition.

Fitness and nutrition guidance commonly associated with endomorphs emphasizes a combination approach: regular resistance training to preserve or build lean mass, together with cardiovascular or interval training to support fat loss; a modest caloric deficit with adequate protein; attention to sleep and stress. Weight changes on the scale may not reflect changes in body composition, so tracking fat mass or proportions can be more informative.

In practice, many fitness professionals prioritize individualized plans over fixed typologies, using body composition, performance, and health goals rather than rigid endomorph labels.
