Oversimplification is the act of making something appear simpler than it is by reducing its causes, effects, or components to only a few factors. It omits context, non-linear interactions, and uncertainty, producing a misleading or incomplete account of a phenomenon. It emerges from cognitive shortcuts, the need for concise communication, and incentives in politics, media, or science to present clear narratives.

It is common in journalism, policy debates, and scientific communication when complex systems must be summarized quickly. Examples include attributing unemployment to a single cause such as "demand" while ignoring structural factors; historical explanations that credit one leader or event for a large complex change; or media claims that a medicine is a guaranteed cure.

Oversimplification has several consequences: it distorts understanding, guides ineffective policy, reinforces stereotypes, and crowds out nuance. In analysis, it is related to reductionism and generalization and can take the form of causal oversimplification or hasty generalization, among other fallacies.

To avoid it, analysts should use multi-factor explanations, acknowledge uncertainty and limitations, consider interactions and non-linear effects, and seek corroboration across sources. Presenting results with caveats, describing the range of possible outcomes, and inviting critique from diverse perspectives can reduce the risk of oversimplification.
