Attributing is the act of ascribing a property, action, origin, or responsibility to a person, group, event, or thing. It involves assigning cause, authorship, or source for a statement, behavior, or artifact. In everyday language it often means naming where a piece of information or an idea came from or who produced it.

In scholarly, journalistic, and artistic contexts, attribution refers to giving proper credit to the original source or creator. This includes citing references in academic writing, naming the author of a quotation, and acknowledging the provenance of an image, data set, or idea. Proper attribution supports transparency, allows verification, and respects intellectual property and licensing terms. Different disciplines and licenses specify how attribution should be formatted, and some works require clear attribution to comply with copyright or open-licensing rules.

In psychology, attribution theory examines how people explain others’ and their own behavior. Common frames are internal versus external attributions (causes attributed to the person or to the situation) and stable versus unstable attributions (whether causes are enduring or temporary). These attributions influence motivation, emotion, and social judgment.

Attribution also appears in fields such as law, where responsibility or liability must be attributed; in cybersecurity, where attackers’ identity is inferred; and in digital content, where licenses such as Creative Commons require attribution to the creator. Misattribution and plagiarism are ethical concerns that undermine credibility, making accurate attribution a foundational practice across disciplines.
