Attackers are individuals or groups that initiate harmful or unauthorized actions against targets. In information security, an attacker is someone who tries to gain unauthorized access, disrupt operations, steal data, or otherwise harm digital assets. Attackers can be external or internal, human or automated, and may act opportunistically or with long-term objectives. They may include cybercriminals, hacktivists, insider threats, corporate competitors, or state-sponsored actors, each with different capabilities and targets.

Motivations vary and can include financial gain, espionage, political or ideological goals, or reputational damage. Attacks range from opportunistic to highly coordinated operations. Common techniques include social engineering such as phishing, malware delivery including ransomware, exploitation of software flaws, credential stuffing, brute-force attacks, and web application assaults like SQL injection or cross-site scripting. More sophisticated campaigns involve supply chain compromise, zero-day exploits, lateral movement within networks, persistence mechanisms, and data exfiltration, sometimes while attempting to avoid detection. Attackers may also conduct physical intrusions or device tampering to achieve access.

Defending against attackers requires a defense-in-depth approach: strong access controls and multi-factor authentication, timely patching, network segmentation, continuous monitoring, and anomaly detection. Security teams rely on incident response planning, regular backups, and employee training to reduce risk. Threat intelligence and attribution are challenging, as attackers often mask their origin, but logs, indicators of compromise, and forensic analysis aid investigation.

Ethical and legal considerations regulate attacker activities; unauthorized access is illegal in most jurisdictions. Responsible security testing and disclosure programs enable organizations to identify and remediate vulnerabilities while minimizing harm.
