Exfiltration is the act of transferring data or other valuable assets from a secure environment to an external location. In information security and intelligence contexts, exfiltration refers to unauthorized or covert removal of data from an organization’s network or premises. It is commonly described as the final stage of a data breach, following initial access and discovery.

Data exfiltration can occur through a range of channels, including network transmission over the internet or email, the use of cloud storage services, remote access or VPNs, removable media, and even steganographic techniques that hide data within ordinary files. Attackers may exploit legitimate protocols in unusual volumes or times, and may attempt to blend exfiltration with normal traffic by using encrypted channels or covert channels such as DNS tunneling.

Defenses rely on a defense-in-depth approach. Technical controls include data loss prevention systems, egress filtering, network and endpoint monitoring, anomaly detection, and encryption of data in transit and at rest. Access controls, multi-factor authentication, and strict application allowlists help limit exposed data. Organizational measures include data classification, least privilege, regular audits, and well-practiced incident response. Detection focuses on identifying unusual data flows, large or unexpected transfers, and exfiltration attempts.

Legal and ethical considerations encompass compliance with data protection regulations and export controls. Exfiltration incidents can lead to financial penalties, reputational damage, and criminal charges. Not all data transfers constitute exfiltration; authorized data sharing follows established policies and approvals.
