Distanceabout

Distanceabout is a term used in cognitive geography and cartography to describe the discrepancy between actual, physically measured distance and the distance that people perceive or report when relating two locations. The concept captures how perception, context, and mental maps alter the sense of how far apart places feel.

Definition and measurement: In practice distanceabout is quantified as a ratio D = perceived_distance / actual_distance. Perceived_distance is obtained from participant estimates, travel-time heuristics, or virtual-reality tasks. A D greater than 1 indicates overestimation, while a D less than 1 indicates underestimation. Distanceabout is dimensionless and can be applied across scales, from walkable neighborhoods to intercity travel.

Origins and scope: The term emerged in discussions of spatial cognition and human–environment interaction, where researchers sought a concise descriptor for systematic biases in distance judgments.
