In this view, learners actively construct personal understanding, while also engaging in the creation of external artefacts that embody and share their knowledge with others. The term signals an intent to integrate interior cognitive construction with the social and material practice of making.

Core ideas include that knowledge is not simply transmitted but built through inquiry, reflection, and collaboration, and that making concrete artifacts—such as models, simulations, prototypes, or digital creations—helps externalize thinking, test ideas, and scaffold further learning. Contextualized problems and authentic tasks provide motivation and meaning.

Practically, constructiveconstructivist approaches appear in project-based learning, design-based learning, and maker-education settings. Teachers function as facilitators and guides, offering scaffolds, prompts, and opportunities for iterative prototyping, peer feedback, and peer teaching. Assessment tends to emphasize process, reflection, and the quality and complexity of the artifacts produced, rather than only final answers.
