Makereducation, or maker education, is an instructional approach that integrates the principles of the maker movement into teaching and learning. It emphasizes hands-on, project-based learning in which students design, build, test, and iterate tangible artifacts or prototypes. The core aim is to foster creativity, problem solving, collaboration, and computational thinking through authentic, real-world challenges.

The pedagogy draws on constructivist and constructionist ideas, promoting learning by doing, tinkering, and iterative improvement. Learning processes are typically learner-centered and inquiry-driven, with emphasis on process and reflection as well as a finished product. Open-ended projects, cross-disciplinary activities, and community collaboration are common, and tools such as electronics, microcontrollers, 3D printing, laser cutting, woodworking, sewing, and programming are frequently used.

Makereducation is implemented in schools, libraries, museums, and community centers through spaces such as makerspaces or fab labs. It often occurs alongside traditional curricula, with projects that address science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) as well as literacy and social studies. Assessment tends to combine portfolios, project rubrics, peer feedback, and demonstrations to a public audience.

Educators serve as facilitators, coaches, and safety guides, connecting learners with mentors, tools, and community partners. Strong emphasis is placed on safety, accessibility, and equity, ensuring diverse learners can participate regardless of background or resources. Historically, maker education grew out of the broader maker movement, gaining visibility through Maker Faire and related publications, and was adopted by schools and libraries as a way to enliven STEM and creative learning.
