Contextualized is an adjective describing something that is interpreted or presented with reference to its surrounding context. In linguistics, contextualization emphasizes that meaning is not fixed but varies with linguistic and situational context. This perspective underpins contextualized word representations in natural language processing, where models such as ELMo, BERT, and other transformers generate representations that depend on neighboring words and overall discourse rather than a single, context-free vector.

In education and pedagogy, contextualized learning connects new material to real-world contexts and learners’ prior knowledge, aiming to improve relevance and retention.
