Decontextualized is an adjective used to describe statements, images, data, or objects that have been separated from the surrounding circumstances that originally gave them meaning. When something is decontextualized, reduction of information can change how it is understood, valued, or interpreted. The term is formed from the prefix de- (removal) combined with contextual, referring to surrounding circumstances.

In linguistics and communication, decontextualized text or quotation is presented without reference to its situational context, including speaker intention, audience, or temporal setting. This can lead to misinterpretation or selective emphasis. Journalistic practice warns against taking quotes out of context, while researchers may deliberately decontextualize data to analyze properties independent of situational factors.

In data science and analytics, decontextualized data lacks metadata or provenance, which complicates validation, replication, or bias assessment. In art and media, decontextualization can involve re-framing objects, images, or narratives to expose underlying assumptions or to provoke new interpretations or critique. In philosophy and theory, the concept is linked to hermeneutics and debates about whether meaning is anchored in context or constructed by interpretation.

Because context shapes meaning, decontextualization is not inherently deceptive but can enable analysis or critique while increasing risk of misrepresentation. Awareness of context and provenance helps assess when decontextualization is appropriate or problematic.
