Avionics refers to the electronic systems used in aircraft, spacecraft, and related platforms to control, monitor, and navigate. In civil aviation, avionics cover communication, navigation, surveillance, flight control, display, and mission-management functions that enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency.

Core components include the flight deck display suite (primary flight display and navigation display), the flight management system, autopilot and flight director, multi‑function displays, communications radios, navigation receivers, transponders, weather and traffic surveillance systems, inertial reference systems, GPS, and data links such as ACARS and satellite communications.

Modern avionics architecture has shifted from analog cockpit instrumentation to digital, integrated modular avionics. Airframes commonly employ shared networks (examples: ARINC 664/AFDX, MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429/629) and integrated processing to support multiple functionally diverse systems. Fly-by-wire control and electronically wired controls are typical in airliners, with software-driven performance management and health monitoring.

Regulatory standards govern development and certification. Software and hardware development adhere to DO-178C and DO-254 respectively; environmental and electromagnetic compatibility testing typically follow DO-160; data-link and interfacility interfaces may reference ARINC specifications. These standards underpin airworthiness certification by aviation authorities.

Trends include glass cockpits, integrated modular avionics, improved reliability through redundancy, satellite-based navigation, ADS-B for air traffic surveillance, AES encryption and cybersecurity measures, and condition-based maintenance using onboard health data. The shift toward digital avionics has enabled more automated flight operations, reduced pilot workload, and improved situational awareness.

Applications span commercial airliners, regional jets, business aviation, helicopters, and many military platforms, as well as space vehicles with return or support systems. Avionics continue to evolve with advances in sensors, data processing, and connectivity, shaping the safety and efficiency of modern flight.
