Helicopters are rotorcraft capable of taking off and landing vertically, hovering, and flying in any direction. Lift is generated by one or more powered rotors that rotate above the fuselage, while an anti-torque system prevents unwanted yaw. Most helicopters use a single main rotor and a tail rotor, though some employ alternative anti-torque arrangements such as coaxial, tandem, or fenestron configurations.

The main components include the rotor system, engines (typically turboshafts), a transmission and drive system, a fuselage with cockpit and cabin, and landing gear. The cyclic control tilts the rotor disc to steer, the collective changes blade pitch to vary lift, and the anti-torque pedals adjust yaw. Modern designs often integrate advanced avionics, automated flight controls, and redundancy for safety.

Flight capability includes vertical takeoff and landing, sustained hovering, and precise maneuvering. Autorotation allows a controlled descent and landing if the engine fails. Performance depends on engine power, rotor design, weight, and environmental conditions. Rotor configurations vary: single main rotor with tail rotor is most common; alternatives include coaxial rotors (two interleaved rotors), tandem rotors (fore and aft), and intermeshing rotors.

History: Early attempts at rotary-wing flight culminated in the 1930s–1940s with the work of Igor Sikorsky. His VS-300 demonstrated controlled, sustained flight in 1939–1940, laying the groundwork for practical helicopters. The postwar period saw rapid development and the Bell 47 and other models popularized civil and military helicopter operations.

Uses: Helicopters enable transport to inaccessible areas, medical evacuation, search and rescue, firefighting, law enforcement, disaster relief, and military assault and reconnaissance. They also serve in construction, logging, journalism, and offshore industries.
