8266
The ESP8266, sometimes referred to simply as 8266, is a low-cost Wi-Fi microcontroller family designed by Espressif Systems. Introduced in 2014, the ESP8266EX combines a 32-bit MCU with a 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi transceiver, enabling a wide range of Internet of Things applications. It can operate as a standalone processor or be used as a wireless modem for a host MCU.
Architecture and features: The ESP8266 includes a 32-bit Xtensa LX106 core running at about 80 MHz. It
Connectivity and power: The module supports station and soft-AP operation, and can function in AP+STA dual-mode.
Development and ecosystem: Early deployments used AT command firmware; later, development environments such as the ESP8266
Variants and successors: The ESP8285 integrates built-in flash, while the ESP32 represents a more capable successor
