As fidelity increases, intermediate wireframes may become clickable prototypes or annotated guides for developers.

Types and distinctions: low-fidelity wireframes use rough boxes and placeholders; mid- to high-fidelity wireframes introduce more precise layout and annotations but stop short of final visuals. Some teams distinguish wireframes from mockups (visual design) and prototypes (interactive).

Elements and conventions: grids, placeholder text, boxes for images, navigation menus, footers, and action controls. Annotations describe behavior, responsive states, and data requirements. Consistency across screens supports usability and information architecture.

Tools and deliverables: common tools include Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and Balsamiq. Deliverables are screen sets, user flows, and documentation with annotations or specifications for design and development.

Limitations and practices: wireframes omit typography, color, and polish by design; they should be treated as living documents that evolve. Best practices include involving stakeholders, testing with users on early drafts, and considering accessibility and responsive layouts.
