A weighbridge, also known as a vehicle scale, is a large platform used to weigh vehicles and their loads. Weighbridges are commonly installed at loading docks, ports, mines, and entry gates to determine gross vehicle weight for billing, compliance, and logistics planning.

Operation involves a vehicle driving onto the platform, which is supported by load cells that convert mechanical force into electrical signals. The attached instrument displays weight data, including gross vehicle weight, tare (empty vehicle weight), net payload, and sometimes axle weights. Static weighbridges require the vehicle to stop for a measurement, while in-motion or dynamic weighbridges can weigh vehicles as they move.

Types include static weighbridges, which provide precise, individual measurements, and in-motion weighbridges designed for high-traffic lanes such as toll roads or border points. There are also axle weighers or axle load scales that focus on determining weights on individual axles and load distribution.

A weighbridge typically comprises a platform, load cells, a load-distributing frame, an electronic indicator or controller, a junction box, and software for data logging, reporting, and integration with management systems. Some configurations use hydraulic or pneumatic components in addition to or instead of electronic sensors.

Calibration and standards are essential for accuracy and legal compliance. Weighbridges are calibrated with standard weights, with measurements traceable to national or international metrology standards. In many jurisdictions they are subject to legal-for-trade requirements and periodic inspection.

Applications span logistics, mining, agriculture, and waste management. Benefits include accurate weight-based charging, improved load planning, reduced road overloading, and automation of data capture for inventory and billing.
