Vaskebjørn, or raccoon (Procyon lotor), is a medium-sized mammal native to North America. The Danish name translates to “wash bear,” referring to the animal’s habit of dunking food in water. Today the species is widespread beyond its native range, having been introduced to parts of Europe and Asia where it often thrives in urban and suburban landscapes.

Physically, raskoones have a distinctive masked face with dark eye markings, grey-brown fur, and a tail with alternating light and dark rings. They typically measure 40–60 cm in body length, with a tail of 25–40 cm, and weigh about 4–9 kg, sometimes more. They are known for their highly dexterous forepaws, strong claws, and agile climbing ability. Their fur provides some insulation in a range of habitats, from forests to wetlands and city parks.

Ecology and behavior: Vaskebjørne are mainly nocturnal and solitary, though mothers with young may form small family groups. They are proficient climbers and swimmers, and they den in tree cavities, burrows, or human-made structures. Their diet is omnivorous and opportunistic, including fruits, nuts, seeds, insects, small vertebrates, eggs, fish, and human food waste. This adaptability allows them to exploit urban environments, where they may scavenge garbage and pet food.

Reproduction and life cycle: Breeding typically occurs once a year, with a gestation around 63 days. Litter size ranges from 2 to 5 (occasionally more), and kits are weaned after about 8–12 weeks. In the wild, lifespans are often short, averaging 2–3 years, though individuals can live longer in captivity.

Status and impact: The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN. In many parts of Europe and Asia, raccoons are considered invasive or potentially problematic due to competition with native wildlife, crop damage, and disease transmission. Management emphasizes reducing attractants, securing waste, and monitoring populations.
