Utebelysning, or outdoor lighting, refers to lighting installed outdoors to illuminate exterior spaces such as residences, commercial properties, streets, and parks. Its purposes include improving visibility and safety for pedestrians, enhancing security by deterring crime, guiding movement, and contributing to the aesthetic character of a site.

Common categories include landscape lighting (path lights, step lights, uplights for trees and statues), general area lighting (floodlights and street-level luminaires), and façade or monument lighting. Fixtures may be mounted on walls, posts, recessed into the ground or paving, or integrated into architectural features.

Most modern utebelysning uses LED lamps for efficiency and longevity. Other options include low-voltage halogen or incandescent and solar-powered systems. Light sources vary in color temperature (warm 2700–3000 K to cool >4000 K) and color rendering. Controls such as timers, photocell sensors, motion detectors, and smart-home interfaces are commonly used to reduce energy use and improve usability.

Design considerations include light distribution and glare, fixture mounting height, shielding to prevent light spill (light trespass) and skyglow, and minimizing disruption to wildlife. A photometric plan guides uniformity of illumination and avoids dark spots. Energy efficiency and long-term maintenance are important factors in selection.

Electrical installation should comply with local codes and standards, with weatherproof, IP-rated fixtures (for example IP65) and appropriate protective enclosures. Installation is typically performed by qualified electricians. Maintenance involves cleaning, inspecting seals, and replacing aging lamps or drivers. Solar and battery systems require periodic output checks.
