Shielding is the practice of blocking, reducing, or redirecting the transmission of energy, particles, or signals between a source and its surroundings. It aims to protect people and equipment, minimize interference, and preserve the operation of sensitive devices.

Radiation shielding reduces exposure to ionizing radiation such as X rays, gamma rays, or neutrons. Materials are chosen for density and interaction properties; common options include lead, concrete, steel, tungsten, and boron-rich polymers. Shield thickness depends on energy, flux, and the required protection level.

Electromagnetic shielding blocks or redirects electric and magnetic fields to prevent interference or limit emissions. Conductive enclosures, such as metal boxes or walls, are common. Materials like copper or aluminum reduce fields, while designs and grounding improve performance. Shielding effectiveness is expressed in decibels.

Magnetic shielding attenuates low-frequency fields with high-permeability materials such as mu-metal. Unlike high-frequency EM shielding, magnetic shields may require large coverage or active stabilization and can saturate. Cryogenic or superconducting approaches provide strong shielding in some applications.

Acoustic shielding reduces sound transmission through walls, floors, and enclosures. It relies on mass, damping, and tight joints; heavy materials, resilient studs, and multi-layer assemblies improve isolation. Applications include recording studios, laboratories, and building envelopes in noisy environments.

Thermal shielding limits heat transfer between objects or spaces. Insulation such as fiberglass, mineral wool, aerogel, and reflective barriers reduces conduction, convection, and radiation losses. In spacecraft and cryogenic systems, reflective shields minimize heat exchange with the surroundings.

Designing shielding involves trade-offs among weight, cost, durability, and space. Standards and calculations estimate attenuation or protection; performance is verified with dosimetry, field meters, or acoustic and thermal tests.
