Töölauad are work surfaces designed for tasks that require a stable surface, such as writing, computer work, drafting or light assembly. They are a fundamental element of offices, schools, laboratories and homes, where people perform everyday tasks that require organization and space for tools and devices. The term töölauad refers to the plural form of the Estonian word for a work desk or workbench.

Design and construction vary to suit different tasks and spaces. Common materials include solid wood, laminated MDF or particle board, and metal frames. Surfaces are often finished to resist scratches, spills and wear, while frames may include adjustable feet for level surfaces on uneven floors. Modern töölauad frequently incorporate ergonomic features such as cable management cutouts, grommets, drawers or modesty panels, and some models offer height adjustability to support sit-stand work and better posture.

Variants and applications. Rectangular desks are standard for offices, while L-shaped and corner desks optimize corner spaces. Computer desks may include keyboard trays and wire management, and drafting desks feature tiltable surfaces for technical drawing. In educational or laboratory settings, töölauad can be modular, with integrated storage or attachment points for peripherals and equipment. Desks may be freestanding or part of larger modular systems that allow reconfiguration.

Ergonomics and care. The optimal desk height is typically around 70–78 cm for adults, with ample legroom and appropriate monitor and keyboard placement. Depth commonly ranges from 60–80 cm. Regular cleaning with mild cleaners preserves finish, and protective mats help extend surface life.
