Timmerhus is a wooden house whose primary structural material is timber. The term is used in Nordic languages, particularly Swedish, Norwegian and Danish, to describe both traditional and modern houses built largely from timber rather than masonry. They encompass a range from simple rural dwellings to more elaborate urban houses and are part of a long Nordic building tradition.

Traditionally, timmerhus are built using two main systems. Log construction involves horizontally laid logs stacked in courses and joined at the corners with interlocking notches, sometimes with insulating infill added later. Timber-frame construction (stomme) uses vertical posts and horizontal members to form a load-bearing frame, with the spaces between filled by boards, plaster, or other infill, and often featuring exterior cladding that shows or emphasizes the timber structure. In some regional styles, half-timbering with decorative timber framing and stucco or wattle-and-daub infill is visible on the facade.

Materials and finishes vary by region and era. Common woods include pine, spruce, and fir. Roofs may be covered with wooden shingles, clay tiles, or slate. Interiors typically reveal exposed timber, with wooden floors and paneling. In modern timmerhus, insulation and air-tightness are improved through modern wall assemblies, new glazing, and sometimes prefabricated timber panels, while traditional aesthetics are preserved in restoration or contemporary designs.

Historical significance and evolution: timber houses dominated in forested Nordic regions before brick and stone became common. They persist in rural and urban settings and continue to be built today using both traditional techniques and modern engineered timber products, balancing heritage with contemporary standards for comfort and energy efficiency.
