Subnetmaskers is an informal term used to describe any device, software, or process that applies, computes, or manages subnet masks within a computer network. It can refer to hardware such as routers, switches, and firewall appliances, or to software utilities and cloud services that configure or automate subnet masking on interfaces or virtual networks.

In IPv4 networking, a subnet mask delineates the boundary between the network portion and the host portion of an IP address. Subnetmaskers may generate masks from CIDR notation (for example, /24 corresponds to 255.255.255.0), validate mask integrity, convert between dotted-decimal and CIDR formats, and compute related addresses such as the network address and broadcast address. They often support subnetting and route summarization to optimize routing tables and address allocation.

Typical uses include configuring interfaces on routers and hosts, assisting with DHCP scope design, and enforcing security or access policies through correctly masked subnets in firewall rules and access-control lists. Subnet calculators and network management tools are common examples of subnetmaskers, aiding administrators in planning, testing, and documenting subnet layouts.

From a privacy or security viewpoint, masking subnets can help obscure internal topology from external observers when combined with network address translation (NAT) or VPNs, though the underlying subnet structure remains a technical design choice rather than a privacy feature by itself. In IPv6, subnetting relies on prefix lengths (for example, /64), with similar masking concepts applied to segment networks.

Limitations include the need for consistency across devices, careful documentation, and awareness that misconfigured masks can disrupt routing and connectivity.
