Stoneworkers are craftspeople who work with natural stone to cut, shape, dress, and install stone used in architecture, sculpture, and monuments. The field includes stonemasons who lay and finish stone masonry, stone carvers who sculpt ornament and figures, and quarrymen who extract blocks from quarries. In restoration, stoneworkers may act as conservators, assessing stone decay and applying compatible repairs.

Techniques combine traditional hand tools—hammers, chisels, pitching tools—with modern equipment such as angle grinders, diamond blades, pneumatic hammers, and CNC carving machines. Dressing smooths and shapes surfaces; carving creates reliefs and ornaments; finishing ranges from rough to polished. Setting involves securing stone with mortar, pins, cramps, or anchors and often requires scaffolding, lifting gear, and weather protection. Workflows vary by project, from cutting and shaping in a shop to on-site assembly.

Stone varieties include granite, limestone, marble, sandstone, slate, travertine, and basalt. Their different hardness, porosity, and weather resistance influence selection, detailing, and maintenance. Common architectural patterns are ashlar, rubble, and coursed work, along with carved inscriptions and decorative details.

Training and employment typically arise through apprenticeships or trade schools, sometimes within guilds or unions. Stoneworkers may operate in construction, restoration, sculpture studios, or quarry operations, with safety emphasized for dust, vibration, heavy lifting, and working at height.

Historically, stoneworkers have been central to building eras from ancient temples and cathedrals to modern monuments. Today they contribute to new construction and historic preservation, often collaborating with architects, engineers, and conservators to balance strength, durability, and aesthetics.
