They may specialize in building stonework (heavy structural masonry), ornamental carving, or heritage restoration and conservation.

History and practice: The craft dates to antiquity; stone cutting required precise skill and knowledge of stone behavior. In medieval Europe, stonemasons were organized in guilds that trained apprentices and journeymen. With the rise of modern buildings, masons adapted to new materials and techniques, including lime and cement mortars, scaffolding, and safety standards. Today, stonemasons often work in teams, collaborating with engineers, architects, and quarrying or fabrication firms.

Tools and methods: Traditional hand tools include hammers, chisels (point, flat, tooth, pitching), and mallets, used to rough-cut and dress stone. Measuring, marking, and laying out courses is essential. Stone is dressed to create smooth faces or decorative profiles; joints are filled with mortar, typically lime-based in restoration and cement-based in modern practice. Common techniques include ashlar masonry, rubble masonry, and ashlar dressings; arches, lintels, columns, and cornices are common structural elements.

Training and professional standards: Training typically occurs through long apprenticeships, combining classroom instruction with practical work, leading to journeyman status and potentially a master mason qualification. Some regions require licensing or certification for certain work, particularly in restoration or heritage sites. Safety, waterproofing, and conservation ethics guide daily practice, and many stonemasons stay abreast of new tools such as stone saws, grinders, and CNC fabrication for precision components.
