Steelstringgitarer are acoustic guitars that use steel strings rather than nylon. They are known for brighter tone, greater sustain, and higher projection compared with classical guitars, making them common in folk, blues, country, and pop genres. They are typically tuned to the standard E–A–D–G–B–E.

Construction and design: The body is hollow and typically built from a spruce or cedar top with hardwood backs and sides such as rosewood or mahogany. The neck is attached to the body and often reinforced with a truss rod. Common body shapes include dreadnought, concert (or orchestra), grand auditorium, and jumbo. The sound is primarily shaped by the top's bracing pattern, most commonly an X-brace, which affects tonal balance and projection.

Strings, tension, and action: Steel strings are under higher tension than nylon strings. The most common materials are phosphor bronze or 80/20 bronze. Gauges range from light to heavy, affecting playability and tone. Typical scale lengths are about 25 inches (645–648 mm). Action and neck relief influence playability and can be adjusted by saddle height and neck adjustment.

Electronics and amplification: Many steelstringgitarer are available as acoustic‑electric models with under-saddle piezo pickups or built‑in microphones, enabling direct amplification with a preamp and equalizer.

History: The modern steel-string guitar emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the United States, evolving from earlier gut‑string guitars. Major brands and luthiers, such as Martin and Taylor, helped standardize bracing, body shapes, and production that broadened the instrument’s popularity.

Care and playing: Humidity control (roughly 40–60%) and regular cleaning help preserve the top and fretboard. Proper setup, including string gauge and neck relief, improves intonation and playability.
