The term distinguishes these instruments from nylon-string (classical) guitars and other stringed instruments that use different materials. History and construction: The modern steel-string guitar traces its development to the 19th century in Europe and North America, where luthiers began using steel strings to increase volume and durability. Typical construction features a hollow wooden body with a soundboard (often spruce) supported by internal bracing, a neck, and a solid or laminated back and sides. Scale lengths commonly range from about 24.75 to 25.5 inches. The top is usually braced with an X-brace pattern to distribute tension from the steel strings. Body shapes include dreadnought, concert, auditorium, parlor, and jumbo, with cutaways offering access to upper frets. Tonal characteristics and playing styles: Steelstring guitars produce brighter, more ringing overtones and stronger projection than nylon-string guitars. Variants exist in string materials, such as phosphor bronze and 80/20 bronze, and in coatings that affect longevity and brightness.
