A stallion is an intact adult male horse, typically used for breeding. The term distinguishes these horses from geldings, which are castrated males, and from colts, which are young males. Biology and development: Sexual maturity usually occurs around four to five years of age, though breeding decisions may vary by individual and breed. A stallion has two testicles housed in a scrotum and a penis designed for intromission during mounting. Hormonal influences from testosterone shape behavior, often increasing libido and territoriality, especially during certain seasons.

Behavior and management: Stallions can be strong and assertive, and may show aggression toward other horses or during breeding. Proper handling requires experienced supervision, secure facilities, and careful turnout arrangements. Training often emphasizes safety, restraint, and socialization, with routines that reduce stress and prevent injuries for both the stallion and handlers.

Breeding practices and care: Breeding is commonly achieved through natural cover or artificial insemination. Semen collection and evaluation may be used to determine fertility. Regular veterinary care, dental and hoof maintenance, vaccination, and monitoring for reproductive or lameness issues are essential. Welfare considerations include avoiding overbreeding, ensuring appropriate nutrition, and providing enrichment and safe social exposure where possible.
