Self-assertion is the practice of affirming one's own needs, rights, and identity in a manner that is both firm and respectful. It involves expressing opinions, setting boundaries, and advocating for oneself without automatically deferring to others. The concept covers verbal expressions as well as nonverbal cues such as posture and tone.

In psychology and social behavior, self-assertion is closely related to assertiveness, self-esteem, and autonomy. It differs from aggression, which violates others’ rights, and from passivity, which fails to protect one's own interests. Effective self-assertion emphasizes clear communication, use of I-statements, and a balance between personal rights and consideration for others.

Exercises may include role-playing, boundary-setting strategies, and coping with social anxiety to help individuals express needs, negotiate conflicts, and resist unwanted pressure.

Context matters: cultural norms about face-saving, politeness, and power dynamics shape how self-assertion is received. In some settings, strong self-assertion is encouraged as empowerment; in others, it may be discouraged or misread as confrontation. The goal is sustainable, respectful advocacy rather than confrontation.

Scholarly work often discusses self-assertion as part of broader constructs such as self-efficacy, empowerment, and agency. Some scales measure assertiveness; the term self-assertion is sometimes used descriptively to describe a personal tendency to voice needs and defend boundaries.
