Pullets are young female chickens that have not yet begun laying eggs. The term is used to distinguish them from chicks (young birds of any sex), cockerels or roosters (young or mature males), and from hens, which are mature female chickens. A pullet becomes a hen once it starts producing eggs regularly.

Pullets are raised from hatch as part of meat or egg production or backyard flocks. They typically reach sexual maturity and begin laying eggs at about 18 to 22 weeks of age, though breed and environment can shift this range. Some fast-maying breeds may begin as early as 16 weeks, while slower varieties may start closer to 24 weeks.

Nutrition and housing are important during the pullet phase. Grower or pullet starter feeds provide high protein to support body development, typically transitioning to layer feed as laying begins. Adequate clean water, sufficient space, perches, and controlled lighting help promote healthy development and a predictable onset of production.

Management considerations include disease prevention, vaccination where appropriate, and gradual introduction to lay housing. Pullets should be housed with minimal stress and safe access to feed and water. Understanding the pullet stage helps optimize future egg production and overall flock welfare.
