Pavadai is a traditional South Indian garment worn primarily by girls and young women. In Tamil Nadu and among Tamil-speaking communities, the two-piece outfit known as pavadai sattai combines a long skirt, called pavadai, with a blouse (sattai). The term pavadai can also refer to the skirt alone.

Design and construction vary, but the pavadai is typically ankle- to floor-length and cut in a circular or flare silhouette that allows a graceful drape. It is usually worn with a fitted blouse and may feature a drawstring or elastic waist for comfort. The fullness of the skirt provides ease of movement and a distinctive silhouette.

Fabrics and decoration differ by occasion. Everyday versions are commonly made of cotton, while festive or ceremonial versions use silk, particularly pattu (silk). The skirt often carries decorative borders with zari embroidery, brocade, or other motifs such as flowers or geometric patterns. Contemporary versions may combine fabrics or use synthetic blends.

Cultural context and usage. The pavadai sattai is a staple of Tamil cultural heritage and is associated with festivals, weddings, temple visits, and other formal occasions. It is frequently worn with traditional jewelry and adornments to create a festive look.

Regional spread and modern adaptations. While most closely linked to Tamil Nadu, pavadai sattai is also worn by Tamil communities in Sri Lanka and among diaspora groups. In modern fashion, variants appear in a range of fabrics, colors, and lengths, from traditional, ornate ensembles to more contemporary, everyday interpretations.
