Overwatering is the practice of supplying more water to plants than they can use, resulting in persistently saturated soil and reduced root oxygen. It is a common issue in potted plants but can occur in garden beds. The core problem is that excess water fills air spaces in the soil, creating anaerobic conditions that stress roots and promote disease.

Causes include frequent irrigation, especially when soil drains slowly; heavy or clay soils; containers without adequate drainage; rapid watering after drought; and plant species with very different water needs. Environmental factors such as high humidity, low light, or cool temperatures can also slow plant use of water, increasing the risk of overwatering.

Symptoms commonly observed are wilting or limpness despite wet soil; yellowing or translucent-looking leaves; stunted growth; leaves dropping prematurely; and roots that are brown, mushy, or foul-smelling upon inspection. The soil may remain damp for extended periods, and in severe cases, plants decline quickly.

Consequences of prolonged overwatering include root rot and other infections, impaired nutrient uptake, and increased vulnerability to secondary pests and diseases. Repeated episodes can permanently damage a plant’s health and reduce its lifespan.

Prevention focuses on drainage and accurate watering. Use well-draining soil and containers with drainage holes; choose appropriate pot sizes; allow the top inch or two of soil to dry before watering for many plant types; adjust watering to season, light, and plant species; and avoid letting plants sit in standing water.

Treatment involves stopping or reducing watering, allowing the soil to dry, and inspecting roots. Remove and discard rotten roots, repot in fresh, well-draining mix, and sanitize tools to prevent spread. In severe cases, more extensive remediation or replacement may be necessary.
