Ortopedens, in Dutch and Scandinavian usage, refers to the physician who specializes in the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedists diagnose and treat disorders of bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. They manage a broad range of conditions, including acute injuries such as fractures, chronic degenerative diseases, congenital deformities, and sports-related injuries. Treatment may be non-surgical, using medication, physical therapy, immobilization, or bracing, or surgical, including fixation, reconstruction, or replacement. In Scandinavian languages, ortopedens is the definite possessive form used in phrases like ortopedens klinik (the orthopedist’s clinic).

Training and qualifications typically involve completing a medical degree followed by a specialty residency in orthopedics. In many countries, board certification is pursued after completing training, with additional fellowship training available in subspecialties such as pediatric orthopedics, spine, trauma, hand and upper extremity, foot and ankle, or sports medicine. Ongoing continuing education is common to stay current with advances in imaging, implants, and surgical techniques.

Subspecialties and procedures vary but commonly include pediatric orthopedics, trauma care, spine surgery, joint replacement (arthroplasty), arthroscopic procedures, deformity correction, and tendon or ligament reconstructions. Orthopedists often work closely with radiologists, physical therapists, and anesthesiologists, and may practice in hospitals, outpatient clinics, or academic centers. Their work emphasizes careful assessment, imaging interpretation, surgical planning, and postoperative rehabilitation to restore function and relieve pain.

The term orthopedics originated from efforts to straighten bones and improve function, historically with a focus on children but now spanning patients of all ages. Major professional organizations include national and international societies that promote education, research, and guidelines in musculoskeletal care.
