Rehabilitation is a systematic set of interventions designed to enable people with health conditions, injuries, or disabilities to achieve and maintain optimal functioning, independence, and participation in society. It is person-centered and goal-driven, typically delivered by a multidisciplinary team and tailored to the individual’s needs, preferences, and environment. The core aim is to reduce disability and prevent secondary complications, while maximizing the ability to perform daily activities and engage in work, learning, and social life.

Rehabilitation spans physical, cognitive, emotional, and social domains. It usually begins after an acute event and continues through recovery, adaptation, and long-term management. An initial assessment identifies impairments, activity limitations, participation restrictions, and environmental barriers, leading to an individualized treatment plan. Interventions may include exercise therapy, manual therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, cognitive rehabilitation, pain management, psychotherapy, and pharmacologic and assistive-device supports. Education, self-management strategies, and environmental modifications are often included. Regular re-evaluation ensures progress and updates to goals.

Settings include hospitals, outpatient clinics, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, and home- or community-based programs. Rehabilitation can address a broad range of conditions, including post-stroke and traumatic brain injury recovery, spinal cord and orthopedic injuries, chronic diseases, and congenital or developmental disorders. A related area, addiction rehabilitation, focuses on reducing dependence on substances and often involves medical care, counseling, behavioral therapies, social support, and ongoing relapse prevention; it may follow a continuum of care from detoxification to long-term maintenance.

Outcomes are measured in terms of functional status, independence, quality of life, pain, and participation in daily life. Challenges include access, affordability, and coordinating care across settings. Evidence-based guidelines favor early initiation and multidisciplinary, goal-oriented programs.
