Motorsystem is a term used to describe the set of components that generates mechanical power from an energy source to drive a machine or mechanism. A typical motorsystem includes a motor, power supply or drive electronics, a transmission or coupling, sensors and a control system, and a cooling or enclosure arrangement. The core function is the motor, which converts electrical, hydraulic, or pneumatic energy into rotational or linear motion.

Electric motors are the most common in industry and come in several types, including DC brushed, DC brushless, AC induction, permanent-magnet synchronous, servo, and stepper motors. Hydraulic and pneumatic motors are also used, particularly when high torque at low speed or simple reversible actuation is required. Control of a motorsystem is achieved through drives and controllers that regulate voltage, current, torque, and speed. For electric motors, methods include direct voltage control, pulse-width modulation, and variable-frequency drives (VFDs) for AC motors. Closed-loop control often uses feedback devices such as encoders, resolvers, or tachometers to adjust performance in real time.

Key performance indicators for a motorsystem include torque, speed, power, efficiency, and thermal behavior. Design considerations also cover load profile, duty cycle, gear ratios, and effective cooling. Safety and reliability are addressed through insulation, protection ratings, proper grounding, and protective interlocks.

Applications span industrial automation, robotics, electric vehicles, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, pumps, and machine tools. Maintenance focuses on bearings, lubrication, electrical connections, and heat management. Advancements aim at higher efficiency, compactness, integrated motion control, and predictive maintenance.
