Modelmarkering is the practice of labeling, tagging, or otherwise marking models and prototypes to communicate information about their identity, status, or characteristics. It can apply to physical scale models, full-size prototypes, or digital representations in computer models.

The purpose is to improve communication among designers, engineers, and project managers; to enable traceability across revisions; to identify variants, authors, dates, and quality controls; and to support assembly, testing, and documentation. Markers help teams understand which version of a model is being discussed, what changes have been made, and what constraints apply.

Markers can be physical or digital. Physical markers include colored stickers, tags, stamps, engravings, or paint traces applied to the model; barcode or QR codes can be added for inventory and tracking. Digital modelmarkering uses metadata, annotations, and version stamps within CAD or product lifecycle management systems; color-coding schemes or annotation layers indicate status or variant.

Common contexts for modelmarkering include architecture and urban planning models; automotive and consumer electronics prototyping; 3D printing workflows; and manufacturing and supply chains. Best practices emphasize a consistent scheme, minimal interference with the model’s form, documentation of marker meanings, durability under handling, and integration with project management tools. A legend or key should accompany the markers to avoid misinterpretation.

Challenges can include fragmentation between teams and tools, marker deterioration, or misinterpretation of codes. In digital environments, ensuring metadata remains synchronized with physical markers is an ongoing consideration.
