Melanomu is a term that refers to a type of skin cancer originating in melanocytes, the pigment‑producing cells of the skin, hair, and eyes. It most commonly presents as a new or changing mole, but can also arise in areas where there is no obvious mole. The disease is characterized by mutations that lead to uncontrolled cell growth, with frequent involvement of the BRAF, NRAS, and KIT genes. In advanced stages, melanomu can metastasize to lymph nodes, lungs, liver, brain, and other organs, making early detection and treatment critical.
