Maladaptívak, or maladaptive behaviors, refer to actions or coping mechanisms that, while initially providing temporary relief or satisfaction, ultimately hinder an individual’s well-being, social functioning, or long-term adjustment. These behaviors often develop as responses to stress, trauma, or emotional distress but fail to resolve underlying issues and may even exacerbate them. Unlike adaptive behaviors—those that effectively address problems and promote healthy functioning—maladaptive behaviors often lead to negative consequences, such as strained relationships, occupational difficulties, or increased psychological distress.

Common examples of maladaptive behaviors include avoidance (ignoring problems instead of facing them), emotional suppression (repressing feelings to the point of emotional numbness), substance abuse (using drugs or alcohol to cope with emotions), or compulsive behaviors (such as excessive shopping, gambling, or internet use). These patterns can become ingrained over time, reinforcing cycles of dysfunction. In some cases, maladaptive behaviors may also manifest as physical symptoms, such as chronic stress-related illnesses or self-harm, particularly in individuals struggling with mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, or PTSD.

The development of maladaptive behaviors is influenced by a combination of psychological, environmental, and biological factors.
