Techniques used by keramikus include hand-building methods such as coiling, slab construction, and pinch pots, as well as wheel throwing and slip casting. After forming, pieces are dried, bisque-fired to harden the material, glazed or decorated, and finally fired at higher temperatures to vitrify the clay and set the glaze. Finishes can be matte or glossy, with a variety of textures and surface treatments. Working with ceramics also requires knowledge of clay bodies, glaze chemistry, firing atmospheres, and safety practices.

Materials and tools commonly used include clay bodies such as earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain, as well as glazes and underglazes.
