Keramikus

Keramikus is a professional who creates objects from clay through shaping, drying, firing, and glazing. The term covers a broad range of practice, from traditional functional pottery to sculptural and contemporary ceramic art. A keramikus may produce items such as dishes, vases, tiles, and bowls, as well as nonfunctional sculptures.

Techniques used by keramikus include hand-building methods such as coiling, slab construction, and pinch pots, as well as wheel throwing and slip casting. After forming, pieces are dried, bisque-fired to harden the material, glazed or decorated, and finally fired at higher temperatures to vitrify the clay and set the glaze. Finishes can be matte or glossy, with a variety of textures and surface treatments. Working with ceramics also requires knowledge of clay bodies, glaze chemistry, firing atmospheres, and safety practices.

Materials and tools commonly used include clay bodies such as earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain, as well as glazes and underglazes. Essential tools encompass the pottery wheel, hand-building tools, ribs, knives, sponges, trimming tools, drying racks, and kilns of various types, including electric, gas, and wood-fired systems.

Training and career paths vary. Many keramikus study in art schools or university programs, or learn through apprenticeships and studio courses. They may operate in independent studios, collaborative workshops, production studios, galleries, or educational institutions. In addition to making objects, keramikus often participate in exhibitions, craft fairs, and teaching activities, contributing to both craft traditions and contemporary ceramic practice.
