The justaucorps was a knee-length, tailored coat worn by men in the 17th and 18th centuries. It evolved from earlier, looser garments and became a standard element of European menswear. Initially, the justaucorps was relatively straight and fitted, with a flared skirt that could be quite wide. It was often made from rich fabrics like velvet, brocade, and silk, and could be elaborately decorated with embroidery, braid, and lace.

Key features of the justaucorps included wide lapels and a high collar, though collars became less prominent over time. The sleeves were typically full and ended at the elbow or forearm, often adorned with lace cuffs. Pockets were usually large and positioned on the front of the coat, sometimes with decorative flaps. Underneath the justaucorps, men wore a waistcoat (vest) and breeches.

The justaucorps reached its peak popularity in the Baroque and Rococo periods. It was an essential part of formal attire and civilian dress. As fashion evolved, the justaucorps gradually became shorter and more fitted, eventually giving way to the frock coat and other later styles of men's jackets. Its influence can still be seen in some modern formal wear, particularly in military uniforms and historical reenactment clothing.
